How to Close Your Bank Account in Ghana
To close your bank account with any bank in Ghana, you will need to write a bank account closure letter to the banking requesting that they close your bank account. You will also have to return all bank properties that are in your possession. Read further to see what a perfect Bank Account Closure Letter looks like.
How to Write A Perfect Closing Bank Account Letter
Writing a bank account closure letter is just like writing a formal letter or an application. It is an official letter and you have you write it in the format it takes. You may choose to mail the letter to the bank or take it to the bank manager.
When writing an official letter, the general rule of thumb is to go straight to the point, keep the letter simple and concise. Follow the guidelines below whenever you are drafting a letter to close your bank account(s).

1. Know Who To Address
Before you start writing your bank account closure letter, it is advisable to call your bank to know who you should address in case you want to close your bank account. Usually it is your bank’s branch manager you address but every company has their own rules so it will be more appropriate if your enquire from the bank.
2. Indicate Your Account Number
For your bank to know which bank account they would be closing, you need to provide them with the account number. State your account number clear in your application letter. Be sure to indicate your name, account number, and any tax ID numbers that are associated with the accounts. This is especially important if you have more than one account at the bank, and you only wish to close one of them.
3. Make Sure Your Account is Zero Balance.
Before you request for the closure of your bank account, make sure that you do not have any funds in the account. If you do have any funds, it is advisable to withdraw it from the bank before requesting for the account closure. Alternatively, you can ask your bank to transfer your account balance to another account number. Do note that transaction fee may apply. Remember that you cannot close your bank account if you account balance is negative. You will need to first settle the outstanding debts before proceed to request for the account’s closure.

4. Return All Bank Properties in Your Possession.
If you have in your possession bank pass book, bank ATM or POS cards, and check books, you will need to return them all. These are the properties of the bank. It doesn’t matter whether they have expired or are still valid. It is customary to send these items along with your bank account closure application letter.

This type of letter is a formal letter and takes the format of writing a formal letter too. To write a bank account closure application letter, you will have to start with your address (senders address), followed by the date then you address the letter to the rightful person with the bank/institution’s address (receiver’s address).
Write your salutation and proceed to write the title or heading of your application. You now have to write your request in the body and end the letter with a complimentary closing remark such as “sincerely yours, yours faithfully”, sign the letter (signature) and write your name.
