The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic is an ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The outbreak was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China, in December 2019, and was recognized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020.
As of 24 March, more than 396,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in more than 190 countries and territories, resulting in more than 17,200 deaths and more than 104,000 recoveries.

Nigeria first recorded its confirmed case of the coronavirus on the 27th of February, 2020. This was an imported case and the patient was an Italian citizen who had just visited the country.
On 9th March 2020, a Nigerian citizen was reported to have tested positive for coronavirus. This person was one of the people who had contact with the Italian citizen. This was the second case of coronavirus in Nigeria recorded in Ewekoro, Ogun State.

On 31 January 2020, following the developments of the COVID-19 outbreak in mainland China and other countries worldwide, the federal government of Nigeria set up a Coronavirus Preparedness Group to mitigate the impact of the virus if it eventually spreads to the country. On the same day, the World Health Organization listed Nigeria among other 13 African countries identified as high-risk for the spread of the virus.

As at the time of writing this article, Nigeria has recorded 42 coronaviruses confirmed cases with 2 recovered and 1 death record. So far, the Lagos State has recorded 29 cases as the highest number of the coronavirus in Nigeria followed by Abuja FCT with 7 cases.
